The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sacked Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his technical crew following the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The decision was taken by the NFF Executive Committee after the Super Falcons were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the tournament and subsequently failed to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the World Cup were dealt another blow after the Falcons lost to South Africa in the playoff qualifier.
The NFF confirmed Madugu’s dismissal in a brief statement on its official X account, directing him and the members of his technical crew to step down with immediate effect.
“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the statement read.
Madugu had previously led the Super Falcons to their 10th WAFCON title last year, but Nigeria’s campaign for an 11th continental crown ended in disappointment amid concerns over preparations, internal team issues and inconsistent performances.
The coach was initially appointed interim head coach in September 2024 before being handed a two-year contract in October 2025 following his successful WAFCON campaign.
His departure brings an end to his spell in charge of the nine-time African champions.
